Born and raised in Scotland, it was little wonder that I began fly-fishing at an early age, chasing the salmon and trout which abounded in the local rivers.

On starting higher school, my inability to draw a straight line meant my Tech drawing teacher, Jack Crombie took pity on me and I was taught instead, to tie my first basic flies, instead of attempting multiple straight lines on paper!

For many years I chased the salmon and trout in some of the countries best rivers, until the travel bug got to me.

During the late 1990’s/early 2000’s I pursued bonefish, permit, snapper, tarpon and other exotic species in Venezuela, Margarita, and Cuba, back when the guided fishing was only 50 $ a day and there were fish aplenty.

At this time, I was tying several thousand flies a year for the wholesale market, under the AScott Flies banner.

I first came to Madeira in 2013, chasing the huge Blue Marlin the island is famous for and, after five years, many fish and several tournament wins, moved to the island in 2017 and founded Aluco Lures.

From our mountaintop studio, I now produce some of the most sought-after Billfish flies, which are fished Worldwide and are responsible for several International and World line-class records.
